Russian Methanol Production & Trade (including exports and domestic sales)

he main points are as follows:

• Exports totalled 128,760 tons in December versus 168,940 tons in November
• January exports increased slightly over December to 137,870 tons
• The EU accounted for 51.4% of Russian exports in December versus 52% in November
• January exports to the EU dropped to 24.3% of shipments
• Turkey and China provided the main destinations for Russian methanol exports in both December and January
• Russian sales to China in 2022 were subject to discounted prices, with average revenues yielding around $240 per ton
• The EU has extended its completion date for pre-October 2022 methanol contracts to concluded by 18 June 2023 instead of 5 January.  This extension does not include new business.

Production

• Russia produced 4.411 million tons of methanol in 2022 against 4.434 million tons in 2021
• Production amounted to 365,699 tons in December against 352,500 tons in November and 370,400 tons in October
• Of the producers only Shchekinoazot was able to record an increase in 2022, rising from 1.052 million tons in 2021 to 1.513 million tons
• Metafrax Chemicals at Gubakha produced 1.182 million tons against 1.211 million tons in January-December 2021, whilst Gazprom Methanol at Tomsk reduced production from 831,520 tons in 2021 to 722,470 tons
• Azot Novomoskovsk did not operate in both November and December, and Tomet continued with its one line

Domestic market

• Domestic merchant sales of methanol totalled 1.589 million tons in January to December 2022 against 1.667 million tons in 2021
• Formaldehyde production dropped 20% in 2022 over 2021, affecting internal methanol processing volumes at Metafrax Chemicals, Akron and Shchekinoazot
• Increased consumption came from Gazprom in gas processing and some organic chemical producers such as Volzhsky Orgsintez which increased purchases from 21,286 tons to 56,318 tons
• January domestic merchant market sales amounted to 126,655 tons against 151,819 tons in January 2022.  Nizhnekamskneftekhim purchased 11,335 tons against versus 32,500 tons in January last yea
