The maintenance shutdowns of the Olefins, Basell Orlen Polyolefins and Metathesis units in Plock, the PTA unit in Wloclawek and the Olefins and PE3 units in the Czech Republic. had an effect on sales of petrochemicals, which came in at 1.3 million tons, down 2%.  Lower sales were reported in Poland (down by 7%) and in Lithuania (down by 5%), while in the Czech Republic sales moved up by 9% due to the impact of the PE3 unit and greater availability of polyethylene.

The refining segment’s EBITDA amounted zl 1,165 million (€249 million) in the third quarter of 2021, having increased by zl 1.5 billion (€320 million).  In the third quarter, crude oil throughput grew by 1% to 8.3 million tons.  This translates into 94% capacity utilisation at the Orlen Group, with full capacity utilisation recorded in Poland.

Orlen Unipetrol Jan-Sep 2021

Orlen Unipetrol increased sales by 36% to Kc 35.8 billion in the third quarter.  The company recorded an operating profit of Kc 2.4 billion against an operating loss of Kc 0.6 billion in the same quarter in 2020.  Margins improved in both petrochemical and retail, with HDPE export revenues rising.   The company's processed oil volume was 1.93 million tons in the third quarter this year, up about 1%.  In the polyolefin sector both volumes and values rose significantly in the first three quarters.

As part of this process Orlen Unipetrol has replaced the existing brown coal boiler room at Litvinov to ensure the operation of the ethylene unit.  The new gas boiler room involved investment of around Kc 1.2 billion (€47.3 billion).  The new equipment will help to cut dust emissions by around 50% and nitrogen oxide emissions by 70%.   Moreover, the new ethylene unit boiler room is equipped with two high-pressure oil-gas boilers which have about 3% more efficiency than the existing heating source.  The new technology enables Orlen Unipetrol to meet the requirements of Czech and EU air protection legislation, including tightened emission limits for large combustion plants which came into effect in August 2021.

Polimery Police-port completed for gases and ethylene

Grupa Azoty Polyolefins has completed the construction of a gas port at Police in which propane and ethylene will be reloaded for the needs of Polimery Police.  This facility possesses about 30% of the current capacity of the LNG terminal at Swinoujscie.  The Police terminal will reload up to 500,000 tpa of gases for Polimery Police, primarily propane for the production of propylene.  The construction of a railway connection is also important for the port but this may take 3-3.5 years to complete.

Grupa Azoty is analysing the claims of Hyundai Engineering Co regarding an increase in costs and an extended completion date in 2023.  Grupa Azoty Polyolefins plans to produce 437,000 tpa of polypropylene.

Czech exports of ethylbenzene rose in the first nine months to 95,615 tons from 64,958 tons in the same period in 2020.  All the ethylbenzene was shipped from Kralupy to Oswiecim in Poland, all within the structures of the Synthos Group.  Ethylene exports from the Czech Republic increased from 12,065 tons in the first nine months to 18,719 tons in the same period in 2020 whilst imports dropped from 3,209 tons to 3,193 tons.  Propylene imports dropped from 35,966 tons to 33,551 tons.  Czech imports of butadiene rose from 48,288 tons in the first nine months last year to 60,613 tons of which Germany supplied a total of 50,103 tons and Hungary 9,572 tons.

MOL’s total EBITDA in third quarter amounted to $1.025 billion against $610 million in the same quarter last year.  The downstream EBITDA increased by 116% to $436 million, boosted by higher refinery and petrochemical margins.  Refined crude for the MOL Group totalled 4.884 million tons in the third quarter in 2021 against 4.760 million tons in the same period in 2020.

Ethylene production for MOL’s two sites at Tiszaujvaros and Bratislava amounted to 632,000 tons in the first three quarters in 2021 versus 561,000 tons in 2020 whilst propylene increased from 285,000 tons to 323,100 tons.

Butadiene production at Tiszaujvaros increased from 42,000 tons in January to September 2020 to 76,000 tons whilst raffinate production rose from 59,000 tons to 114,000 tons.  In the polyolefin division the MOL Group in Hungary produced 411,000 tons of polypropylene against 396,000 tons in 2020 and 268,000 tons of HDPE against 301,000 tons.

The polyol project at Tiszaujvaros exceeded 89% overall completion at the end of Q3, although progress is somewhat behind schedule as a result of the pandemic situation.   MOL aims to complete the 200,000 tpa polyol project in the second quarter in 2022.  Next year the group aims to focus investment ideas on small-to-mid-size projects (e.g., metathesis, maleic anhydride).

Orlen Poludnie-propylene glycol start-up

Orlen's new propylene glycol plant at Trzebinia has moved into production phase following completion in October.  The propylene glycol plant has a capacity of 30,000 tpa which could potentially cover around three-quarters of the country's demand.  The installation not only secures the production of glycol, but fuel grade hydrogen.  Green glycol can be used in medicine, cosmetics or the food industry. It can also be used in aviation as a means to defrost and de-icing aircraft.  Glycerine will be used for the production of organic glycol, which is obtained at the Trzebinia refinery as a by-product in the biodiesel production process.

Sales revenues of Grupa Azoty in the third quarter amounted to zl 3.882 billion (€826 million), zl 1,466 million (€312 million) higher than in the same period in 2020.   From January to September 2021, the Capital Group generated zl 10,417 million (€2.217 billion) of sales revenues, zl 1.067 billion (€227 million) of EBITDA profit and a 10.2% EBITDA margin.  Sales revenues increased by zl 2.628 million (€560 million), EBITDA by zl 64 million ((€14 million) and a lower margin by 2.6%.  Overall, the high prices of most products in key segments (fertilisers, chemicals and plastics) as well as higher total sales volume in the chemicals and plastics segments have offset the rises in raw material costs in the nine months in 2021.

The estimated operating profit in the third quarter amounted to zl 107 million, and net profit amounted to zl 14 million, compared to zl 41 million of net profit and zl 62 million of EBITDA in 2020.  In the first half of 2021, Grupa Azoty achieved zl 6.54 billion in revenues, zl 383 million in operating profit, zl 766 million in EBITDA and zl 254 million in net profit.

Grupa Azoty’s profit margins continue to be affected by high gas prices.  In September 2020 prices had fallen to €7/MWh and by the middle of 2021 had risen to €50/MWh.   For the first three quarters the

consolidated EBITDA of the group was positively influenced by a greater than expected allocation of free CO2 emission rights, which was included in the estimated settlements of CO2 emission costs for the first half of 2021.

Grupa Azoty reported that the result of the Fertilizers-Agro segment in the third quarter of 2021 was negatively affected by a significant increase in natural gas prices and higher prices and sales of nitrogen, compound and specialty fertilisers in relation to the third quarter of 2020.  In the chemicals segment, the increase in results was the result of high dynamics of price growth of all products, especially melamine, OXO alcohols, plasticizers and sulphur.  The margins achieved were negatively affected by higher raw material prices and slightly lower sales volumes.

The biggest impact on the results of the plastics segment was due to higher margins in the entire product chain (benzene/phenol, caprolactam and polyamide 6), resulting from increased demand in the target application markets.  In the third quarter of 2021, Grupa Azoty ceased its polyoxymethylene production activities which had a positive impact on the segment's result.
